The Innovation Relay Centres are currently co-funded by the EC under the 6th Framework Programme as part of the Innovation and SME Programme.

The IRC-Network will continue its operation within the Sixth Framework Programme for RTD. In April 2004 new contracts will start for the IRCs who were selected through a call for proposal published in April 2003 under Framework Programme 6 "Research and Innovation" activity area of the specific programme "Structuring the European Research Area"

The "Research and Innovation" programme aims at improving Europe's innovation performance by stimulating a better integration between research and innovation and by working towards a more innovation-friendly policy and regulatory environment.
